Shedd Aquarium's beluga whale Mauyak, (MI-yak) gave birth to a calf at 2:42 a.m. on Thursday, August 16, 2007. After their first few hours together, both mother and calf appear to be doing well and will remain under 24-hour observation by Shedd's animal care staff for several months. Shedd experts estimate the calf is 5 ½ feet long, weighing more than 100 pounds. There has been no determination of the gender of the calf.
